IBM plans cloud computing services for 2009

Friday, April 24, 2009

IBM plans to launch several cloud computing services this year, taking on companies such as Amazon.com Inc, Google Inc, Microsoft Corp and Salesforce.com Inc.
Well as i was speaking about cluod computing in earlier posts as this could be hotest thing in the market as already many companies are aiming to cloud computing as it could minimise the costs to lot extent. Cloud computing systems run software and store information in remote, large-scale data centers that users and programmers access over the Internet.IBM has launched an internet based data backup and recovery services which is similar to this field

IBM is very keen at the future when looking at this new step of the company, as IBM has already entered into different areas like environmental stuff, Eco environment projects with the government and so on , it seems that it wont fall behind any sort of competetion that can be given by its competetors.speaking on the competetion, at present IBM is lagging behind companies which are youger to IBM in cloude services.Business interest in cloud computing has picked up since Amazon started offering storage and computing services over the Web about three years ago. Google and Salesforce.com are the other two early leaders.

IBM's technology was developed using some know-how obtained through a partnership with Google to develop cloud services for academic computing that dates back to 2007.The U.S. National Science Foundation announced on Thursday it has awarded about $5 million in grants to universities that are developing applications on that IBM-Google academic cloud.

Oracle buys Sun

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun’s cash and debt. “We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle’s earnings by at least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing. We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion to Oracle’s non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over $2 billion in the second year. This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share contribution in the first year than we had planned for the acquisitions of BEA, PeopleSoft and Siebel combined,” said Oracle President Safra Catz.

“The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems,” said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. “Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system – applications to disk – where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”

There are substantial long-term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris. Java is one of the computer industry’s best-known brands and most widely deployed technologies, and it is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired. Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle’s fastest growing business, is built on top of Sun’s Java language and software. Oracle can now ensure continued innovation and investment in Java technology for the benefit of customers and the Java community.

The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle database, Oracle’s largest business, and has been for a long time. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris. Oracle is as committed as ever to Linux and other open platforms and will continue to support and enhance our strong industry partnerships.

“Oracle and Sun have been industry pioneers and close partners for more than 20 years,” said Sun Chairman Scott McNealy. “This combination is a natural evolution of our relationship and will be an industry-defining event.”

“This is a fantastic day for Sun’s customers, developers, partners and employees across the globe, joining forces with the global leader in enterprise software to drive innovation and value across every aspect of the technology marketplace,” said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun’s CEO, “From the Java platform touching nearly every business system on earth, powering billions of consumers on mobile handsets and consumer electronics, to the convergence of storage, networking and computing driven by the Solaris operating system and Sun’s SPARC and x64 systems. Together with Oracle, we’ll drive the innovation pipeline to create compelling value to our customer base and the marketplace.”

“Sun is a pioneer in enterprise computing, and this combination recognizes the innovation and customer success the company has achieved. Our largest customers have been asking us to step up to a broader role to reduce complexity, risk and cost by delivering a highly optimized stack based on standards,” said Oracle President Charles Phillips. “This transaction will preserve and enhance investments made by our customers, while we continue to work with our partners to provide customers with choice.”

The Board of Directors of Sun Microsystems has unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

There will be a conference call today to discuss the transaction at 5:30 a.m. Pacific time. Investors can listen to the conference call by dialing (719) 234-7870, passcode 923645. A replay will be available for 24 hours after the call ends at (719) 884-8882, passcode: 923645. A live audio webcast of the call will be made available at www.oracle.com/investor and a replay will be available for seven days after the call ends.

Does YouTube actually make any money?

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

While the video sharing website is so phenomenally popular that it has become the second biggest search engine in the world – there's still precious little information on whether the money is rolling in.

While parent company Google has to divulge certain financial details thanks to its publicly-traded status, it remains highly secretive about the numbers produced by its individual business units.

That's where Spencer Wang, an analyst with Credit Suisse, steps in. By Wang's estimates, the video site is due to lose $470m this year – an incredible amount for a website that Google bought for $1.65bn just two and a half years ago.

Google Aims for General Elections India

General Elections are the biggest thing which is going to come up this summer. People have very less information about all the constituancies. Now Google india is helping out people by providing some valuable information about the upcoming Elections through their dedicated website. The website that would provide information to the voters about their constituency and the candidates, is available both in English and Hindi. Earlier there was a site announced by Yahoo for the same purpose.

A voter may visit the Google India elections centre by logging onto www.google.co.in/loksabha2009. After first selecting his or her constituency and viewing the location on a Google Map, the voter may examine data highlighting - for instance - any changes in literacy, poverty and employment rates in the constituency since the previous general election. The voter may then consider the educational credentials and attendance record of his or her current Member of Parliament and some of the qualifications of those candidates contesting in this year’s election.

Voter can also search for his or her name in the voter rolls to confirm his or her registration and to receive information about the accompanying polling station. According to Shailesh Rao, managing director, Google India, “Being an informed voter is a prerequisite for the healthy functioning of India’s democracy. While this is especially true during all elections cycles, we have this year observed many initiatives that have sought to promote access to election-related information in India. Keeping in mind our global mission of organising the world’s information and making it universally accessible and useful, we have created this elections centre to highlight some of the most important information available to voters in India today. Indian voters have the right to information about their constituencies and candidates, and we are confident that the website will yield a positive change in voting patterns during the upcoming general elections.”

what is WEB 3.0 ?

Thursday, April 2, 2009

Web 3.0 this is the new thing into the Internet Era. Web 3.0 is bring new revolution to the internet industry or internet market or internet usage, this is what experts talk about. We heard about Web 2.0, Web 1.0, Web 3.0 what are all these have ever imagined , i mean the guys who doesn't know about these things. Have you ever imagined some 5 to 6 years back that you can shop something on internet or can you share information on internet or Concept called Social Networking which drove people crazy on the internet world.Well these all things are categorised based on web 1.0, web 2.0, web 3.0. Now i want to share my knowledge what are all these....

Imagine you want to watch a movie and you want spicy food in yours hands when watching a movie and you need a cab for going to the movie theater. Then you need to visit n number of sites for getting information on all these things. But in Web 3.0 you can this information on a single click that is what experts say. Well this is just an example there are lot more things in Web 3.0.

Berners-Lee's(who invented WWW in 1989) vision of the future Web is similar to the concept of Web 3.0. It's called the Semantic Web.

Well internet guru's say that Web 3.0 is one which acts like your secratary who knows everything what you required. I mean it knows what you want and access all the internet to answer your question. The basic thing i can say is Web 3.0 is all about using internet to make connection with information where as web 2.0 is used for making connections between people.

The basic thing is Web 3.0 will understand the data on the web. Well it is like microsoft is developing a search engine which gives the results based on relationship between the words. I mean it just not gives the serach results just by comparing the words but it gives the result based on understanding the content.

Speaking on the approaches of Web 3.0 they say that internet maintaing a uniqueness between the users. i think it will create a unique id for each profile searching on the internet and results will come according the profile. Services like TiVO and Pandora provide individualized content based on user input, but they both rely on a trial-and-error approach that isn't as efficient as what the experts say Web 3.0 will be.

Some experts believe that the foundation for Web 3.0 will be application programming interfaces (APIs). An API is an interface designed to allow developers to create applications that take advantage of a certain set of resources. Many Web 2.0 sites include APIs that give programmers access to the sites' unique data and capabilities. For example, Facebook's API allows developers to create programs that use Facebook as a staging ground for games, quizzes, product reviews and more.

One Web 2.0 trend that could help the development of Web 3.0 is the mashup. A mashup is the combination of two or more applications into a single application. For example, a developer might combine a program that lets users review restaurants with Google Maps. The new mashup application could show not only restaurant reviews, but also map them out so that the user could see the restaurants' locations. Some Internet experts believe that creating mashups will be so easy in Web 3.0 that anyone will be able to do it.

This is a bit of information which i am sharing about the web 3.0 but i say that web 3.0 is lot more than what i said till now. we need to keanly observe the market giants how they are changing towards web 3.0 .

$70 Million Cloud Computing Facility by SAS

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Cloud computing this is word which might look strange to some people as they are not aware of this methodology . Cloud computing is Internet ("cloud") based development and use of computer technology ("computing").It is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualised resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them. You can get more information on cloud computing by clicking this link.

Cloud computing users can avoid capital expenditure (CapEx) on hardware, software and services, rather paying a provider only for what they use

Well SAS, a business analytics software and services company, is going to set up a $70 million, 38,000 sq.ft cloud computing facility to provide the additional data-handling capacity needed to expand SAS’ OnDemand offerings and hosted solutions.

“This project is proof that, despite the down economy, SAS continues to grow and innovate,” said Jim Goodnight, CEO, SAS. “The growing demand by our customers for hosted solutions has given us this opportunity to invest even further in North Carolina and the Cary community.” for desiging this project, more than 1000 people are involved and is built on LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards

The facility will include two 10,000-square-foot server farms. Server Farm 1 is anticipated to be on-line mid-2010 and support growth for three to five years. Server Farm 2 will be constructed as a shell and will be populated with mechanical and electrical infrastructure once Server Farm 1 reaches 80 per cent capacity.
